The Lonely Movie

You are here

Universal Studios are to make a new untitled feature project featuring musical comedy trio The Lonely Island. Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone will star in and produce the film, which Judd Apatow will produce under his Judd Apatow Productions banner. The plot details are as yet unknown, and the presence of dicks, boxes, boats and Susan Sarandon are yet to be confirmed.

The Lonely Island have already released three studio albums that have resulted in 20 singles. Earlier this year they co-wrote and performed Everything Is Awesome from Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie, which charted in multiple international territories and has become a geek cult hit.

Direction of the movie will be split between Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who previously directed the popular Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts that initially catapulted The Lonely Island to comedy stardom, including the viral Lazy Sunday video and the Emmy-winning Dick In A Box. Schaffer directed the group’s first film Hot Rod, as well as Fox’s 2012 sci-fi comedy The Watch. Taccone made his feature directing debut on another Universal comedy, 2010’s SNL sketch spin-off feature MacGruber, and has since directed episodes of Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (starring Andy Samberg).

Universal’s Erik Baiers will oversee on their behalf, and all three Lonely Island members and Apatow are represented by UTA and Mosaic. Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone are legally represented by P.J. Shapiro, while Judd has his law matters taken care of by Bryan Wolf.
